All About Termites

What are termites?

Termites are small, winged insects that live in underground colonies. They are known for their ability to eat wood, which can cause damage to homes and other wooden structures. Termites are often called "white ants" because of their similarities in appearance to ants. There are more than 2,000 species of termites worldwide.

How to detect a termite infestation

There are a few signs of a termite infestation:

  • Termite swarms: Termites reproduce by forming swarms. A termite swarm usually contains both winged males and females. These winged reproductive termites will fly away from the colony to mate and start new colonies. If you see a swarm of insects in or around your home, it could be a sign of a termite infestation.
  • Mud tubes: Termites build mud tubes to travel from the ground to the wood they eat. Mud tubes are about the width of a pencil and are usually found on the foundation or exterior walls of a home.
  • Wood damage: If you see any damage to the wood in your home, it could be a sign of termites. Termites eat wood from the inside out, so damage may not be visible at first.
  • Discarded wings: After termites mate, they shed their wings. If you find winged insects in your home, it could be a sign that there is a termite infestation.

How to get rid of termites

If you think you have a termite infestation, getting rid of it as soon as possible is important. Termites can cause a lot of damage to your home if they are left unchecked. There are a few ways to try and get rid of termites on your own, but most DIY solutions are only temporary.

The best way to ensure that you eliminate termites and save the structure of your home is to hire an experienced termite exterminator.
